Acknowledgments

This work is based on Stucky (2003), but has been modified to facilitate mobile access and updated with additional images. Taxa included in the keys presented here are those which the senior author has encountered commonly during fieldtrips in the eastern Piedmont throughout the last thirty years. Keys are based on the author’s observations of living material and herbarium specimens in NCSC. The keys benefited from an unpublished key written by Dr. James Hardin and from keys presented by Brown and Brown (1972: Woody plants of Maryland, Port City Press) and Preston and Wright (1988: Identification of Southeastern Trees in Winter, NC Agr. Exp. Sta. AG-42). Nomenclature and taxonomic concepts follow Weakley (2010). A list of excluded species can be found here. Images were captured by Jon Stucky and Alexander Krings, with additional contributions by Will Cook (Duke University), Paul G. Davison (University of North Alabama), and Jeffrey Pippen (Duke University). Re-use of images for any purpose requires the express, written permission of the copyright owner (contact Alexander Krings for more information). This work was supported in part by NC Extension, the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture, acc. nos. 62303 and 1002682.
