Helonias L. (Melanthiaceae [Liliaceae])
Helonias is represented by a single species in the United States—H. bullata (Fed T, S2 G3). The genus has been historically treated as monotypic, although numerous workers have recognized similarities between the eastern North American taxon and east Asian Heloniopsis and Ypsilandra. Tanaka (1998) recognized a unified Helonias, but more recent molecular work suggests generic status is warranted for all three lineages (Fuse & Tamura 2000).

Habitat. "Wetlands that are saturated but not flooded, including southern Appalachian bogs and swamps. Atlantic white cedar swamps, swampy forests bordering small streams; boggy meadows and spring seepage areas. Commonly associated with some evergreens, including white cedar, pitch pine, American larch, and black spruce" (USFWS).
Range. Endemic to the eastern United States.
