Description [top]
Mulberries (Moraceae) form small trees growing to 45 feet tall at maturity (more commonly to about 25 feet) but are weedy as a sapling. Leaves are alternate and simple, with toothed margins. Leaves are both lobed and unlobed. Plants exude a milky sap from young twigs when broken. Male and female flowers form on separate plants (dioecious). Fruit are berry-like and seed are spread by birds. Tree and shrub seedlings are not well controlled by preemergence herbicides, and selective postemergence controls are not available. Hand pull seedlings when small. [TOP]
