Text Box: Pinus taeda is found throughout natural areas around Raleigh. Loblolly is associated with early succession of forests and are often found colonizing on old abandoned fields.

Bark is deeply ridged and reddish brown.

Bark of a young tree is deeply ridged similar to the more mature tree.

Comparison between the cones of Pinus echinata (left) and Pinus taeda (right). There is a noticeable size difference.

The longer pine needles on the right are from Pinus taeda and usually occur in bundles of 3’s. The shorter needles on the left are from Pinus echinata and usually occur in bundles of 2’s.
