Usually found in upland sites. 

Younger bark may not be as roughly ridged as older bark. This bark has vertical furrows typical of many oaks.

 Leaves have deep

margins with 3-7

lobes; bristle tipped teeth and U-shaped base. Undersides of the leaf are light colored, and covered with a brownish orange pubescence. The top of the leaf is a glossy green.

Dark colored bark that is deeply ridged; inner bark is orange.
