Introduction

Welcome to the project web site for the curriculum From natural selection to classification: Building on concepts. The activities in this curriculum were developed as part of the outreach component of National Science Foundation: Collections in Support of Biological Research grant NSF-DBI 1203409. The activities address the following North Carolina Essential Standards in Science:

Bio.3.3.1 Interpret how DNA is used for comparison and identification of organisms
Bio.3.4.2 Explain how natural selection influences the changes in species over time
Bio.3.5.1 Explain the historical development and changing nature of classification systems
Bio.3.5.2 Analyze the classification of organisms according to their evolutionary relationships (including: dichotomous keys and phylogenetic trees)

Please note that this curriculum is not intended as an introduction to the concepts of natural selection, evolution, taxonomy, and classification, but rather as a means to expand upon these concepts through additional learning opportunities. Facilitators and students should have covered and be familiar with these concepts prior to engaging with this curriculum.

The complete facilitator's guide and associated files are available from the links above.
