Description [top]

Livid amaranth (Amaranthaceae) is a summer annual pigweed, distinguished by a prostrate to ascending growth habit (most pigweeds grow upright) and a notch or cleft at the tip of the leaf blade.  While several pigweeds occasionally occur in container nurseries, livid amaranth appears to be increasing in abundance in the Southeast.  Most infestations begin with plants growing on the borders of plant beds which spread to containers.  Limited information is available on livid amaranth control, but most preemergence herbicides labeled for use in nurseries are expected to be effective.  Control plants around the nursery with preemergence and postemergence herbicides to prevent spread.
