Description [top]

Large crabgrass (Poaceae) is a prostrate to ascending, summer annual grass. In containers, seedlings emerge from spring through early autumn. Stems root at the nodes. Leaves and leaf sheaths are conspicuously hairy. Smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum) is very similar to large crabgrass but lacks the conspicuous hairs. Plants flower in summer and early fall, and then die after frost. There is typically only one generation per year, but seedlings emerge throughout the summer months. Crabgrass and many other similar summer annual grasses are well controlled by most preemergence herbicides labeled for use in nursery crops, as well as by selective postemergence grass herbicides. [TOP]
