Description [top]

Two species of chickweed (Caryophyllaceae) are common in container nurseries common chickweed and mouseear chickweed. Common chickweed is a winter annual, most common in the cool weather of fall, winter, and early spring but once established may persist into summer. Common chickweed leaves and stems are light green and lack distinct hairs. Leaves are opposite with pointed leaf tips. Flowers are distinctive - white with 5 split petals. Chickweed forms a mat or may climb into the canopy of nursery crops. These plants are prolific seed producers, spreading easily during hand weeding. Do not let plants go to seed in the nursery. Control chickweed around the property to prevent spread. Well controlled by most preemergence herbicides available for nursery use, with the exception of oxadiazon. [TOP]
